Mounties Knock Off Seawolves, Move to 1st in ACAA
The Mount Allison Mounties women's volleyball team, 2nd in the ACAA at 7-1, returned to the McCormack Gymnasium on Friday night in front of a packed crowd to welcome the undefeated UNB Saint John Seawolves in a battle for first place in the conference.
The two teams would play an evenly matched first set to 15-13 before a 4-point rally by UNB Saint John led by a kill and block from Dominique Gendron would swing the first set the way of the visitors, the first lost set at home for Mount Allison this season.
UNBSJ would control the first half of the second set up to 18-16 before a 4-point rally from the Mounties would give them the slight advantage. The Seawolves would eventually have set point up 24-23, but would surrender back to back points to Mount Allison who would eventually win the marathon set 28-26.
Neither team led by more than four points until a timeout from the Mounties up 19-17 would trigger a 4 point rally led by two aces from Julia Henry to take the set 25-18 and the 2-1 lead in the match.
The Seawolves would have a quick start to the fourth set but it would be the home Mounties that would control the vast majority of the action, leading by as many as nine in the set thanks to great play from Erica Astephen and Logan Tait and would go on to win the set 25-20, the match 3-1, and hand UNBSJ their first loss of the season.
