Mounties Victorious in Home Opener over Hurricanes
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties women's volleyball team played their home opener and first match inside the newly renovated McCormack Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon as they played host to the Holland Hurricanes.
It was the visitors who got off to a fast start in this one as a couple of long service runs led to the Hurricanes taking the first set by a score of 25-16.
The home side would respond in the second set however as they got off to a hot start of their own and retained a healthy lead throughout the set to even the match 1-1 with a score of 25-16 in the second set.
A back and forth third set saw the home Mounties come out on top 25-23 after a late set rally by the home side saw them take the final 5 points to come from behind and take the 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set.
The Mounties would take the momentum from the previous two sets into the fourth and come away with a 25-18 win in the fourth set to secure the match. The Mounties were led on the day by strong performances from Marie Fogarty (Charlottetown, PEI) and Emma Burns (Fredericton, NB). Top performers for the Hurricanes were Abby MacDonald (Charlottetown, PEI) and Mason Babey (Lumsden, SK).
Mount Allison (2-0) are back in action tomorrow afternoon, November 12th, as they travel to Halifax to take on the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics with the start time set for 2:00pm. Holland (2-1) will follow a similar path to the Mounties and head to Halifax tomorrow afternoon for a match with UKC, start time set for 12:00pm.
