(SACKVILLE, NB) It was Senior Day today for the Mounties as they hosted Memorial. It was the hometown Mounties who prevailed with a final score of 2-0.
For much of the first half, both teams attempted to gain momentum offensively but could not put one past the keepers – Sydney Walsh (St. John's, NL) and outgoing senior Sophie Austin (Kanata, ON) were forced into making a few key saves.
The start of the second half saw renewed pressure by the Mounties and they eventually solved Walsh in the 67th minute as Taryn Greco (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) gave her team the lead off a corner as the ball bounced around in the box. With her relentless pressing and pace all throughout the game, Greco would go on to be named Subway Player of the Game.
The Seahawks would have an opportunity to equalize in the 73rd minute but another stellar save by Austin would confirm the clean sheet for the Mounties.
A wonder strike from 40 yards out by Isabelle Hebert-Senecal (Moncton, NB) with less then ten minutes to play caught the Seahawks keeper unawares and confirmed the Mounties would leave today with three points.
Memorial (2-5-2) will play host to UPEI on October 21 at 5 p.m.
Mount Allison (1-7-1) for their part will travel to Moncton on October 22 for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
