(Sackville, NB) - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeat the Mount Allison Mounties 2-1 on Sunday, September 30, on Alumni Field.
The Mounties are awarded a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, but first-year keeper Kyanna Gillis has a beautiful save. The score at half remains 0-0.
Saint Mary's Alexa Tymkiw scores the first goal of the match at the 61st minute, a beautiful header goal off the Huskie's corner kick for her first goal of the AUS season.
The Mounties are awarded their second penalty kick of the game, because of SMU's #4 holding foul in the box. Mountie Amanda Piltzmaker places it in the bottom righthand side of the goal, scoring her first goal of the season and tying the game 1-1.
The SMU Huskies don't give up, pressuring the Mounties. Saint Mary's Anelise Karakostas shoots the ball at MTA keeper Sophie Austin, who can't keep the handle on the ball. It would fall into the net to give the Huskies the lead. Score remains 2-1 for the duration of the game.
The Subway Player of the Game is awarded to SMU Huskie rookie Kyanna Gillis, for her strong first game of her first AUS season.
After a Thanksgiving break, the Huskies travel to Cape Breton on Friday, October 12th and the Mounties travel to Moncton on Saturday, October 13th. MTA and SMU will face each other one more time this season, on Saturday, October 20th in Halifax, NS.
