Women's Soccer Mounties Earn Split to Open the Season
van Diepen has 2 goal weekend
The Mount Allison women's soccer Mounties knew that they were entering the 2014 season with experience and a core of players who have grown up together in the league. This experience is showing it's worth already as the Mounties earned a split on the opening weekend of regular season play. The Mounties opened their season with an impressive 3-2 win in Halifax at Dalhousie before dropping a close 2-1 decision at home against StFX on Sunday.
On Saturday, the Mounties opened the season on the road with a 3-2 win against the Dalhousie Tigers. The Mounties used a quick start to surprise the Tigers and open up a 3-0 lead before the half. The home Tigers responded with a big push of their own, scoring 2 in the 2nd frame but the Mounties we able to hold on for the win.
Second year Mountie Jane Rouse scored her first AUS goal in the 11th minute to give the Mounties the lead. The Mounties struck again in the 25th minute when striker Amanda Volcko scored her first of the season. Fourth year Mountie and two sport athlete Emily van Diepen made it three nil before the half.
On Sunday van Diepen went right back to work, scoring for the Mounties just 6 minutes into the game. X responded with two first half goals of their own and despite a strong push by the Mounties in the 2nd half they were unable to equalize. The win on Saturday was the first regular season AUS win for first year Mountie coach Gene Ouellette.
The Mounties men and women will next see action on Friday, September 12th when they travel to Charlottetown to play UPEI for games at 5Pm and 7:15PM. The Mounties return home to face Saint Mary's on Sunday, September 14th. Game times are 1PM and 3:15PM.
