(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison women's hockey team took to the ice on a beautiful fall evening Friday against the UNB Reds at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre, looking for their first win of the season.
The first period saw chances for both teams but no goals as the sides headed into the locker rooms tied at zero after 20 minutes. It was the visitors from UNB who found the scoresheet first just 33 seconds into the second period as Payton Hargreaves (Whitby, ON) found the back of the net with the assist from Lillian George (Nipissing First Nation). In the middle of the second period the Reds would double the lead on the power play as Lindsey Smith (Onslow, NS) beat the Mount Allison keeper with Hargreaves getting her second point of the night on the assist.
UNB began the third period just as hot as they did the second as Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON) scored to give the Reds a 3-goal advantage. They would add to their lead midway through the period as Lauren Carter (Milton, ON) gave the visitors a 4-0 lead on the powerplay. Lillian George would wrap up the goalscoring for the night as her shot short side found the top corner to put UNB up 5-0. Her 2-point performance earned her AUS Player of the Game honours.
UNB (4-1) look to extend their win streak to 5 tomorrow night as they take on the Saint Mary's Huskies in Fredericton with puck drop set for 7:00pm. Mount Allison (0-4) look for their first win of the season as they head over the Confederation Bridge to take on the UPEI Panthers tomorrow, with an afternoon 2:00pm puck drop.
