Mounties drop game to StFX
(SACKVILLE, NB) This marks a week of mental health awareness for the Mounties as the Student-Athlete Mental Health Initiative (SAMHI) encouraged all in attendance today to keep the conversation going in an effort to improving mental well-being.
The Mounties hosted the X-Women who were with the additions of sharpshooters Lea MacLeod and Maggy Burbidge as they returned from their gold-medal performance with Team Canada at the Winter FISU World University Games. StFX would go on to win 5-0.
It would be a very eventful first period for the X-Women as they scored all five of their goals in the opening frame. The aforementioned Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth, NS) would get her team's first goal as a rebound found her in the crease for a tap-in. Burbidge extends her U SPORTS goal scoring lead with her 21st of the season.
Lauren Dabrowski (Tiny, ON) would find the back of the net at the 4:08 mark to bring the lead to 2-0.
Halfway through the first period Megan Smith (Antigonish, NS) would get on the board with an unassisted goal of her own.
Subway Player of the Game Kamdyn Switzer (Stittsville, ON) would add two goals 16 seconds apart to force a goaltending change from the Mounties. Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) with yet another stellar performance after allowing just the one goal on 42 shots after coming in for Hanna Pagdato (Winnipeg, MB).
Amaya Giraudier (Assiniboia, SK) would turn aside all 25 shots she faced en route to the shutout win.
StFX (16-4-2-1) will host UNB on January 29 at 3 p.m. for the battle of the top two teams.
Mount Allison (2-19-1-1) for their part will host UPEI on February 3 at 7 p.m. for the last home game of the season.
