Mounties fall just short versus Aigles Bleues
(SACKVILLE, NB) In the first meeting in the Winter term between Mount Allison and Moncton it was the Aigles Bleues that were victorious squeezing out a 2-1 win on Friday night.
Both goaltenders kept their team in the game as Moncton goalie Audrey Berthiaume (St-Bruno, QC) would finish with 21 saves on 22 shots while Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) put together another great effort with 38 saves on 40 shots.
Moncton would get a quick start and put together a solid first period while the Mounties had some chances on their only powerplay of the game. Shots would favour the Aigles Bleues 13-5.
The Mounties would get the game's first goal in the second period after Chelsea Krahenbil (Winnipeg, MB) took the feed from Molly Baxendale (Dalem Lake, NS) and made no mistake. A great neutral zone play by Island Bernard-Docker (Canmore, AB) and some subsequent pressure by the Mounties forwards made this chance possible.
Moncton thought it tied the game moments later but after the referees convened at center ice they would eventually wave it off for what seemed to be goalie interference.
Moncton would strike on its fifth powerplay opportunity of the game at the start of the third when Isadora Quirion (Saint-Gédéon de Beauce, QC) buried the rebound past Zak. The Aigles Bleues captain would go on to be named Subway Player of the Game.
The game's winning goal would come off the stick of third-year forward Stéphanie Pélandeau (Ottawa, ON) after Quirion's deft stick lift in her own defensive zone led to a two-on-one where Pélandeau made no mistake putting the puck in the top left corner.
Moncton (8-11-0-0) host the StFX X-Women on January 15 for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
Mount Allison (2-16-0-1) for their part host the first-place UNB Reds on January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
