Mounties Thrill home crowd with 3-2 win over SMU

The Mount Allison Mounties defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-2 in AUS women's hockey action at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre in Sackville on Friday night.

The Mounties handed the Huskies their first regulation loss of the year as the Huskies had opened the season with 3 wins and an overtime loss.

It was the Huskies who opened the scoring 6 minutes into the game when Keyera Nelson pounced on a rebound after Kate Gallant put the original shot on Kaitlyn Evelyn in the Mounties net.

The Mounties responded quickly as Tallon Stephenson used a great pass from the corner to find Lauren Steele in the slot. Steele beat Saint Mary's goalie Dagny Hudspeth with a shot to the top corner to pick up her first career regular season AUS goal. Two minutes later Sydney Stotski gave the Mounties a 2-1 lead when she took a corner feed from Lucy Newman and buried the puck in the back of the net.

The only scoring of the 2^nd period came when Chelsea Krahenbil collected her first AUS goal on the Mounties first power play of the game. Krahenbil jumped on a rebound from a point shot off the stick of Ashlee Hodge-Hirschfield. For the 2nd time in the game, the puck went to the Mounties bench to be taped up as a keepsake for a first AUS goal.

Caleigh Meraw brought the score to 3-2 with an extra attacker on for Saint Mary's late in the game but with only 6 seconds remaining, it wasn't enough. As the buzzer went the Mounties celebrated the win.

Evelyn was named Subway Player of the Game as she stopped 38 of the 40 shots she faced. Evelyn made several key saves in the last 5 minutes to preserve the Mounties' lead. Hudspeth stopped 22 of the 25 shots she faced for the Huskies.
