Mounties stun X with late comeback and shootout win
The Mount Allison Mounties picked up their first AUS women's hockey win of the season in dramatic fashion on Friday night. After trailing 1-0 for a good part of the game, the Mounties scored late in the 3rd period before eventually winning in a shootout to thrill the Sackville crowd.
The two teams played a close first period, with both teams coming out strong. The Mounties had a couple scoring opportunities on the power play, with strong shots from Maddy Koughan and Sam Jarron. The X women also had some scoring opportunities, with shots from Kate Gotaas and Josie Chisholm. After the first period, the X Women led the shot count 10-7, with still no score.
The second period started off with a great scoring opportunity by Maddy Koughan, but it was StFX's Carly Burrows who found the back of the net. The X-Women dominated most of the 2nd period, increasing their shots to 20 over the Mounties. A couple penalties to Chislom and Thomas gave the Mounties a 5 on 3 power play, but no success. The 2nd period ended with St FX leading 1-0.
The beginning of the 3rd period started off strong with both teams being aggressive with the puck. With the final seconds winding down sophomore Jordyn Clark found Lauren Shaw cutting in the neutral zone. From there Shaw beat the X defender and slid the puck five hole, tieing the game up with only 15.3 seconds remaining in regulation. A jubilant Mounties bench erupted.
After no scoring in overtime and double overtime, the Mounties and X Women faced off in a shootout. Maddy Koughan was the lone scorer in the shootout to lead the Mounties to their first win of the season 2-1. Mounties goalie Bianca Zak stopped all 3 shooters she faced during the shootout and 36 of 37 shots during the game.
