Mounties drop season opener to Huskies

The Mount Allison Mounties opened the AUS women's hockey regular season with a 2-0 loss to the defending AUS champion Saint Mary's Huskies in Sackville Friday night.
Fans were treated to a fast paced 1st period that saw the teams trade chances but with no goals being scored. Each team registered 6 shots on goal but none had crossed the goal line as the first period came to an end.
Saint Mary's started to gain an advantage in shots as the 2nd period wore on. Four minutes into the 2nd period the Huskies struck first when Kaitlin Howarth found the back of the net. Caitlin Pejkovic and Mary MacDonald picked up assists on the play.
Two minutes into the 3rd period the Huskies took a 2-0 lead when Taylor Keeping scored on a screen shot. Leandra Timmerman picked up an assist on the play. The teams traded power play opportunities in the 3rd period but neither team was able to add to the scoring.
Sophomore goaltender Katie Mowbray was impressive in goal for the Mounties, stopping 39 of 41 shots she faced. Rebecca Clark made 16 saves for the Huskies while picking up a shutout to start the season.
The Mounties will now travel to UNB on Saturday, October 13th to face the Reds in the first regular season game as they return to the AUS after an absence of almost a decade. Saint Mary's will see their next action when they host StFX next Thursday, October 18th.
