Mounties drop NCAA exhibition game with Maine Black Bears
The Mount Allison Mounties ventured into the United States on Saturday to play the University of Maine Black Bears in a neutral site international exhibition game in Presque Isle, Maine.
The host Black Bears from the NCAA Division 1, Hockey East Conference defeated the Mounties 6-3 in the game.
Maine's Tereza Vanisova and Morgan Sakundiak both scored first period unassisted goals to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead.
In the game's second frame, Maine burned the Mountie twine 3 more times with goals by Vendula Pribylova, Brooke Stacey and Vanisova with her second of the match. The Mounties broke the ice scoring-wise when Maddy Koughan (Mermaid, PE) potted a powerplay unassisted marker at 14:13 for a 5-1 tally after 40 minutes.
The Mounties' powerplay proved effective against the Bears in the third as Kara Anthony (Toronto, ON) scored at 0:38 and Heather Richards (St. Anthony, NL) added another at 8:34. Maine's Vanisova completed a hat-trick with the Black Bear's 6th for a 6-3 final.
Jillian Flynn took the win in the Maine crease turning back 18 of 21 shots. Keri Martin (Brampton, ON) stopped 26 of 31 before she was relieved by Lindsay Wray (Courtice, ON) who covered 11 of 12 for the Mounties.
The Black Bears entered the match with a 2-8-1 record for 8th place in the 9 team Hockey East league. The Mounties finished the first half with a 3-11-0 for 6th in the 7 team AUS loop.
The Mounties return to action 6 January, 2017 when the team hosts the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues at 7:00pm at Sackville's Tantramar Veterans' Memorial Civic Centre.
