Mounties season ends with 5-2 loss to StFX
The Mount Allison Mounties women's hockey season came to an abrupt end on Friday night with a 5-2 loss to StFX in game two of their best of 3 AUS quarterfinal. The Mounties had lost game 1 on Wednesday night to fall behind 1-0 in the series.
The Mounties got the start they wanted when senior Sam Bujold scored on the power play les than two minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Bujold tipped a point shot from Mounties captain Mackenzie Lalonde.
The X-Women evened the score at 1-1 three minutes later when Connor Garagan banged in a rebound for the home side. With five minutes remaining in the first period Heather Tillsley's wrist shot from the point found the net and the X-Women went to the locker room with a 2-1 first period lead.
Neither team was able to find the net during the middle frame, setting up a wild third period marked by four special teams goals. StFX's Nicole Corcoran scored 4 minutes into the 3rd period on the power play to give the X-Women a 3-1 lead. But the Mounties answered back just 53 seconds later when Kara Anthony scored on the power play to make it 3-2.
StFX added a power play goal with 8 minutes gone in the 3rd and then with the Mounties on the power play, the X-Women got a shorthanded goal from Kara Power to make it 5-2. The Mounties pressed to get back in the game but it wasn't enough to avoid the end to their season.
The X-women will now move on to play either the Saint Mary's Huskies or the UdeM Aigles Bleues.
