Mounties drop game 1 of Subway AUS Women's Hockey Quarterfinals
Sackville, NB – The StFX X-Women defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 3-0 on Wednesday evening at Veterans Memorial Civic Centre in Game 1 of their best 2-of-3 Subway AUS quarter-final series.
Sojung Shin (Seoul, Korea) had the shutout victory for the fifth place X-Women over the fourth place Mounties as she had 29 saves in the game.
In a fast paced first period that saw both teams with several scoring chances, it was veteran fifth year X-Women defense Jenna Pitts (Antigonish, NS) who opened the scoring at 9:26 as she capitalized on a scoring chance from Kara Power (New Glasgow, NS) and captain Taylor Dale (Oromocto, NB). Power then gave StFX a 2-0 lead as she notched a goal at 12:48 with Jaelei Meyer (Carlyle, SK) assisting. The X-Women edged the Mounties in shots, 13-12 in the opening period.
The second period saw only one goal, coming unassisted off the stick of Dale at 4:03 while on the power play, as she tucked the puck in on the short side behind Mounties netminder Keri Martin (Brampton, ON). Shots were even at 10 apiece in the middle frame.
The third period didn't bring any further scoring as the X-Women held a 13-7 shot advantage. The Mounties put on a charge late in the game, pressuring the StFX net with shots but Shin held her ground. Finals shots in the game were 36-29 in favor of StFX.
The same two teams will be back on the ice Friday evening at 7:00 pm in Game 2 action at the StFX Keating Centre. Game 3, if necessary, is slated for Sunday at 3:30 pm in Sackville.
The quarter-final series winner will advance to the best 2-of-3 semifinal series against either the first place Saint Mary's Huskies or second place Moncton Aigles Bleues.
