Mounties end regular season with 4-2 loss to STU
The St. Thomas Tommies bested the Mount Allison Mounties 4-2 in AUS women's hockey action Sunday afternoon in front of 361 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
With the win, the Tommies complete the regular season with a record of 16-7-1, while the Mounties drop to 11-12-1.
The Tommies were led by fourth-year forward Kelty Apperson, who recorded a hat trick in the game. Apperson put the Tommies on the board 8:40 into the first after capitalizing on a partial break and beating Mounties netminder Kerri Martin fivehole. Five minutes later, Apperson tipped a shot from Paige Jackson to the back of the net for her second goal of the game and a 2-0 Tommies lead.
The Mounties pressured and outshot the Tommies 15-11 in the first 20 minutes, but STU goaltender Taylor Cook kept them off the board.
It was back and forth in the second, but the Tommies were the only team to capitalize with Alisha Gilbert tipping home a slap shot from Jessica McCann at 18:12.
With six seconds left in the frame, Marina Sergina took a penalty, giving the Mounties a power play to start the third. The Mounties weren't able to capitalize on their first man advantage, but they made no mistake on their second power play opportunity as Amanda Volcko buried a rebound at 13:15.
The Mounties continued to push back against the Tommies and were rewarded with a goal from Jessica Campbell, who brought MTA within one with 3:50 to go.
"The power plays weren't the brightest plays on our part," Murphy said. "It gave them momentum. In the end, you don't give someone who's down 3-0 momentum going into the third period."
The Mounties pulled Martin with 1:29 left in the game, but Apperson picked up a loose puck and scored an insurance marker on the empty net to give STU the 4-2 win.
Apperson was named the Subway Player of the Game, while Volcko and Cook were named the game's second and third stars, respectively.
