The Mount Allison Womens Hockey Mounties split their weekend games in AUS Hockey action at the Tantramar Civic Centre. On Saturday afternoon the Mounties defeated University de Moncton 3-0 while on Sunday afternoon The Saint Thomas Thomas edge the Mounties 3-2 in another exciting and well played game. The results leave the Mounties tied for fourth place league standings.
On Saturday afternoon against U de M, the teams battled through a scoreless first period, the Mounties scored the only goal in the second, and followed that up with two goals in the third. Senior Amanda Volcko opened the scoring at 12:19 of the second period when she pounced on a loose puck and snapped it into the open net. Line- mates Kara Anthony and Heather Richards drew assists on the goal. Rookie Jennifer Desautels got her first goal in a Mountie jersey at 7:47 of the third period when she drove to the net and converted on a rebound from a shot by fellow rookie defenceman Ashley Murphy to extend the lead to 2-0. U de M pulled its goalie with just over a minute left in the game and the move backfired when Kelsey Taylor scored her second of the season into the open net. Goaltender Keri Martin was again outstanding turning aside all 29 U de M shots directed her way. The Mounties generated 24 shots at U de M goalie Gabrielle Forget.
Sunday afternoon's game again featured end to end action from start to finish, hi-lited by excellent goaltending by the Mounties Martin and STU's Taylor Cook. STU lead 2-1 after the first period, extended it to 3-1 after 40 minutes, while the Mounties scored the only goal in the third. STU opened the scoring at 7:27 when STU captain Kelly Aspersion converted a Mt. A turnover into a goal. Mountie captain Captain MacKenzie LaLonde tied it at 1-1 at 14:32 snapping a close in shot from a nice pass from lineman Shelby Colton. Sam Bujold also drew an assist on the play. STU Lauren Henman scored from in close on a power play with 30 seconds left in the period to give STU the lead heading into the dressing room. The Mounties had a great period outshooting STU 17 - 8 but were stymied by Cook and goal posts. STU's Myfanwy Thomson scored the only goal in the second period, jamming in a goal from a scramble. Converted defenceman Kelsey McDougall scored the second Mounties second goal mid-way through the third on the power play with assists going to LaLonde and Ashley Murphy. The Mounties had some good chances late but had many of their shots blocked by the STU defence. STU outshot Mount A 30-29 in the game.
Next weekend the Mounties will conclude their five game home stand when they host the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday afternoon and the first place Saint Marys Huskies on Sunday afternoon. Both games will be played at the Tantramar Civic Centre and both games will start at 2:15 pm.
