The Mount Allison Mounties earned a crucial two points on Wednesday night as they defeated the 4th place St. Thomas Tommies 5-3 at the Tantramar Memorial Civic Centre. With the win the Mounties have jumped ahead of UPEI (who lost 4-3 to Moncton) and into a tie for 5th place with Dalhouise.
The Mounties, who have won 4 of their last 6 games and who have earned points in 5 of the last 6, sit at 8-13-2, good for 18 points with 1 game remaining. The Mounties host Dalhousie on Wednesday, February 11th. Dalhousie has 3 games remaining with games against Saint Mary's and StFX in addition to the game with the Mounties. For their part, UPEI plays their final remaining game on Friday against StFX. If UPEI loses in regulation or overtime, the Mounties will clinch a playoff spot.
The Mounties got off to a quick start on Wednesday building a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period on goals by Amanda Volcko, Shelby Colton and Rosie Heffernan. Lauren Henman scored on the power play for St. Thomas.
The teams traded goals in the second period, first with Kelly Matarazzo scoring to stretch the Mounties lead to 4-1. St. Thomas responded less than a minute later when Cassidy McTaggart found the back of the net. Sam Bujold restored the Mounties 3 goal lead with 8 minutes remaining in the game. Kristina Kocsis scored for the Tommies in the final minute to make it 5-3 but it was too little too late.
Keri Martin was stellar in goal in victory, making 41 saves for the Mounties. Abby Clarke made 17 saves on 22 shots for the Tommies.
St. Thomas will finish out their regular season schedule against Moncton on Friday.
