
Mounties Beat Seawolves in Regular Season Finale
(Sackville, NB) The UNBSJ Seawolves were back in Sackville on Sunday for the final game of the ACAA Women's basketball regular season against the Mount Allison Mounties.
The first quarter started with both teams trading points and turnovers on consecutive possessions. Ava Sprague led the way for the Seawolves with 3 points and 3 rebounds in the quarter. For the Mounties it was Amelia Mitchell and Jillian Mumford setting the tone with 4 points and 3 rebounds respectively. Mount Allison was able to stack baskets in the later stages of the period, with the score 16-9 after one quarter.
The second quarter was saw runs from both sides. Avrey Alward knocked down a 3 for UNBSJ to cut into the deficit. Ava Godfrey hit a 3 of her own in response for the Mounties. Bailey Henderson was finding space under both nets, bringing down 3 rebounds for the visitors. Mitchell made her presence felt as well for the home side with 6 rebounds of her own. Mount Allison went into the half up 26-22.
The second half saw tighter defense from both teams in the opening minutes. The Seawolves spread the scoring around in the quarter, with five different players getting in on the action. Emma Roberts was the leading scorer for the Mounties in the frame with 5 points. Turnovers and fast-break points were the story of the rest of the quarter, with Mount A taking a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Mounties took control of the game in the fourth quarter. Kaitlyn Simard had 6 points to go along with a pair of rebounds for Mount A. The Seawolves struggled to get any consistency offensively for parts of the quarter. Maddie Baker was able to knock down a 3 pointer and a jumper from the elbow to lead the Seawolves in scoring in the frame. The Mounties slowed the pace down and ran out the clock to close the game out. The final score was 57-40 for Mount Allison.
This marks the end of the regular season for UNBSJ (2-16) and Mount Allison (14-4). The ACAA Women's Basketball Championships begin Friday, February 28th in Saint John.
