Mounties Beat Tommies At Home
(Sackville, NB) After five straight road games, the Mount Allison Mounties Women's basketball team were back at home for a clash with the St. Thomas Tommies Friday night.
The Mounties jumped out to the early lead with Amelia Mitchell scoring six quick points. The Tommies answered with a couple of baskets from Katie Vidito, including a big three pointer. Turnovers on both sides kept either team from building a large lead. After one quarter, the Mounties were up 11-9.
In the second quarter the Mounties turned the pressure up defensively, holding St. Thomas to six points. Jillian Mumford led the way for Mount Allison with a couple of blocks, a pair of big defensive rebounds, and six points on the offensive end. The Mounties took a 24-15 lead into the half.
The second half saw the home side extend their lead. Amelia Mitchell led the way once again with another six points, a couple of baskets off nice feeds from Kate Fillmore. The Tommies were able to find some offense courtesy of Charlee Connors. After three quarters, Mount Allison was up 40-26.
With a quick start to the fourth quarter St. Thomas was able to cut into the lead with a three from Claudia Steeves, bringing the deficit to just 10. Both teams traded buckets, and the pace of play increased across the board. A pair of key free throws late from Jillian Mumford were enough to put the game out of reach. The final score was 47-38 for the Mounties.
St. Thomas (8-7) is back in Sackville on Sunday, February 9th to take on Mount Allison (11-4) for the second half of the double header. Tip-off is set for 1pm.
