Mounties Head to Winter Break First in ACAA
The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team returned to the McCormack Gymnasium for the final time in 2024 to take on the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics in a battle for first place in the ACAA.
A strong defensive first quarter from both teams would see MSVU lead 12-6 at the end of the first thanks to 7 points for Celine Sterckel.
Haley Hemphill would ignite the Mountie offense in the second quarter with 11 points on 5/7 shooting in the frame. Celine Sterckel would add another 6 for the Mystics but it would be the Mounties ahead at halftime 29-26.
The two teams would play a very evenly matched back and forth third quarter with Celine Sterckel continuing to lead the way for the Mystics getting her tally up to 21 by the end of the quarter with 8 in the third. Reigning ACAA Athlete of the Week Amelia Mitchell would have 6 points in the quarter for the Mounties to help the home side hold onto the lead, entering the fourth ahead 48-45.
The Mystics would keep the game close led by 5 points from Ashleigh Marshall in the fourth quarter but it would be Jillian Mumford with 7 points in the quarter sealing the win and solo first place in the ACAA for Mount Allison.
Mount Allison (7-2) return to action on Friday, January 17th on the road in Halifax against UKC with tip-off set for 6:00pm. MSVU (6-3) play their first game after the break on Saturday, January 11th on the road in Frederiction against St. Thomas with tip-off set for 2:00pm.
