King’s defeat Mounties, claim ACAA Championship
The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team took to the floor at Holland College on Saturday for their ACAA semi-final matchup with the UKC Blue Devils, looking for the chance to return to the ACAA championship game for the second year in a row.
The Blue Devil offense came out strong in the first quarter led by Emma Garagan who had 7 points in the first frame. Mount Allison was led by Danielle Alexander who had 7 points while being a perfect 3/3 from the field. UKC would head to the second quarter with a 21-15 lead.
The Mounties would settle into the game in the second quarter thanks to great play from Lauren Furlong who had 8 points including two three-pointers. Arek Akeg added 5 points for the Blue Devils and the teams headed into the locker rooms at halftime with King's leading 35-34.
Both teams would trade baskets in the third quarter and King's would retain their 1-point lead heading into the final quarter, 51-50. Danielle Alexander added another 9 points for Mount Allison and King's had a balanced attack with 7 scorers in the quarter.
Lindsey Black and Emma Garagan helped open the door for the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter with 5 points each, and the Mount Allison offense would struggle in the final frame, with King's taking the game by a final score of 73-62. Danielle Alexander led all scorers with 26, and Emma Garagan led the way for UKC with 20.
UKC would go on to defeat Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday afternoon to take the ACAA Championship and qualify for the CCAA Women's Basketball national championships at Lakeland College. Mount Allison finishes a 14-4 season that saw Reese Nowlan and Jillian Mumford named to the second-team all-conference team, as well as Head Coach Tom Skabar receiving Coach of the Year honours.
