Mounties Use Strong Third Quarter to Reign over King’s
The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team took to the floor at the McCormack Gymnasium for the final time of the 2023-2024 season on Sunday afternoon as they played host to the UKC Blue Devils. It was an emotional day for the Mounties as they honoured four of their own for Senior Day – Lauren Furlong, Reese Nowlan, Hillary Shea, and lead assistant coach Keira Dyck.
The two teams would take a few minutes to settle in the game and then went back and forth for the rest of the first quarter as the home Mounties would take a slim 17-15 lead into the second. Reese Nowlan led the way for Mount Allison with 6 points off two threes and Lindsay Black got the Blue Devils going with 7 of her own.
Mount Allison would begin to pull away into the second quarter thanks to the aggressive play of Jillian Mumford who had 7 points in the frame including 5/6 shooting from the free throw line. Jenna Bain would start to heat up for UKC with 6 points in the quarter, but it would be the Mounties that would take a 36-28 lead into the halftime break.
The Mountie defense picked up considerably in the third quarter as they held the Blue Devils to just 4 points on 1/14 shooting in the quarter. Aforementioned senior Lauren Furlong led the way offensively for Mount Allison in the quarter with 6 points off two threes, and the home side headed to the final quarter up 55-32.
Both sides would trade baskets throughout the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils would not be able to chip into the Mountie lead as the game finished with a final score of 70-46. Reese Nowlan led all scorers with 18 points on 6/10 shooting, and Lindsey Black led UKC with 13 points of her own.
Mount Allison (14-3) are back in action for their final regular season game on Friday, February 23rd on the road in Fredericton as they take on the St. Thomas Tommies with tip-off scheduled for 6:00pm. UKC (10-6) have their next game on the 23rd as well, as they travel to Moncton to take on the Crandall Chargers with tip-off set for 6:00pm.
