Mounties with Wire-to-Wire Victory over Hurricanes
The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team were back in action at the McCormack Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon as they welcomed the Holland Hurricanes to Sackville.
The home Mounties were quick to jump on the Hurricanes led by Lauren Furlong who hit two threes and had 9 points in the opening quarter. Danielle McKinnon had 4 important points for Holland off the bench in the first quarter to keep the game close as Mount Allison led by 7 after 1.
Reese Nowlan led the way for the Mounties in the second quarter with 7 points to extend the lead for the home side to 10 heading into the halftime break. Alexa Rancourt had 6 points in the quarter for the Hurricanes.
A balanced offensive attack from the Mounties saw the lead grow to 13 after the third but Molly Steadman with 5 points in the frame helped Holland hang tough.
It would be the Mountie defense holding the Hurricanes to 9 points in the fourth quarter as well as a spark off the bench from Kaitlyn Simard that would be the difference in this one as the Mounties would hang on to take it by a score of 69-52.
Mount Allison (10-3) retain second place in the ACAA and will travel to Crandall on Sunday, February 4th for their next game with tip-off set for 2:00pm. Holland (7-7) are back in action at home in Charlottetown as they play host to the Crandall Chargers on Friday, February 2nd with tip-off set for 6:00pm.
