Mounties Stifle St. Thomas in the Second Half, Take Victory over Tommies
The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team were back in action at the McCormack Gymnasium this afternoon as they welcomed the St. Thomas Tommies to Sackville, looking to continue a win streak from their victory at UNBSJ last Saturday.
The visting Tommies would start off hot however shooting 3/6 from beyond the arc including 5 points from Katie Vidito and Celine Sterckel to help St. Thomas open a 6-point lead heading into the second quarter.
Both teams would trade baskets in the second quarter, and it would be St. Thomas that would carry an 8-point lead into the break by a score of 33-25. Paige Leblanc was perfect from the field in the quarter and had 7 at half. Lauren Furlong hit 2 threes and was 4/5 from the field in the second quarter to keep the Mounties within striking distance.
From there the Mounties defense picked up considerably, holding the Tommies to just 4 points in the third quarter, and with Lauren Furlong continuing her solid play, the Mounties were able to cut the deficit to just one heading to the fourth and final frame.
Strong defense would be the story of the fourth quarter as well as the Tommies were held to 7, and just 11 in the half. Kaitlyn Simard provided a big spark off the bench for Mount Allison including 9 points in the fourth quarter to help the home side pull away and defeat St. Thomas by a score of 51-44.
Mount Allison (9-3) now currently hold second place alone in the ACAA and will be back in action tomorrow, January 28th at home in Sackville as they play host to the Holland Hurricanes. St. Thomas (4-8) continue to sit fifth in the conference and will be back in action on Saturday, February 3rd in Halifax as they take on the UKC Blue Devils.
