Mounties Win Defensive Battle against Chargers
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team was back in action Friday night at the McCormack Gymnasium as they played host to local rival Crandall, looking for their sixth straight win.
Defense was the story of the first quarter as neither team reached the double-digit mark in points, however the home Mounties would take a slim 8-6 lead into the second quarter.
From there, the offense would pick up as the Mounties would take a 33-25 lead into halftime off strong performances in the second quarter from Katie Feasby and Danielle Alexander who had 8 and 5 points in the quarter respectively. The Chargers would hang tough however through strong play from Molly Sheen and Shania Glenn.
The home Mounties would begin to pull away in the third quarter however as they opened up a 17-point advantage heading to the fourth quarter from strong all-around team play, while Crandall turned the ball over 5 times in the quarter and had only 10 field goal attempts.
A relatively even fourth quarter would see the Mounties come away with a 66-48 win in this one, their sixth consecutive win. Top performers for the Mounties were Katie Feasby with 12 points and Isabella Jones with 9. The Chargers were led by Molly Sheen with 15 and Shania Glenn with 12.
Mount Allison (6-1) rise to first in the ACAA with a big matchup coming up on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Halifax to take on the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics who also sit at 6-1 and handed the Mounties their only loss of the year so far. Tip-off in that game is set for 1:00pm. Crandall (0-6) have wrapped up their play for the 2023 calendar year and will return to the floor Friday, January 12th at home in Moncton as they play host to the St. Thomas Tommies, with tip-off set for 6:00pm.
