Mounties Use Strong Third Quarter to Defeat Seawolves
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team was back in action on Sunday afternoon at the McCormack Gymnasium looking for their third win in a row against the UNBSJ Seawolves.
The visiting Seawolves got off to a hot start early forcing Mounties Head Coach Tom Skabar to use his first timeout to stop the UNBSJ run led by Bailey Henderson (Miramichi, NB). His team was able to respond with a run of their own thanks to 7 first-quarter points from Jillian Mumford (Calgary, AB) to cut the deficit to just 1 at the end of the first quarter.
A balanced attack from the Mounties in the second quarter saw the home side regain the lead for most of the quarter and a buzzer beating 3-pointer from Grace Tilley (Rothesay, NB) gave Mount Allison a 3-point lead, going into the halftime break up 33-30.
The Mounties ramped up the defense in the third quarter and held the Seawolves to just 7 points over the 10-minute stretch to open a double-digit lead heading to the fourth quarter, up by a score of 48-37.
A back and forth fourth quarter kept the Seawolves in it, but they were unable to get within striking distance of the home Mounties, dropping by a score of 61-52. Top performers for the Mounties were Jillian Mumford who had 16 points and 5 rebounds on 6/7 shooting from the field and Reese Nowlan (Miramichi, NB) who added 12. Strong bench performances for the Seawolves came from Jenny Cripps (Miramichi, NB) and Avrey Alward (Saint John, NB) who each chipped in 13.
Mount Allison (3-1) are back in action on Friday, November 24th as they travel half an hour up the Trans-Canada Highway to Moncton to take on Crandall. UNBSJ (1-5) are also in action next on the 24th as they play host to St. Thomas. Both games are set for 6:00pm tipoffs.
