
Strong Second Half Secures First Win for Skabar and Mounties
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team took to the floor at the McCormack Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon hoping to bounce back from their opening night loss to Mount Saint Vincent.
It was the visitors who got off to a hot start, led by Amy Plaggenhoef (Stratford, PEI) with 15 and Lauren Armstrong (Canberra, AUS) who had 8 points and 6 rebounds at the halftime break. The home Mounties were weathering the storm of the Hurricane runs through a strong performance off the bench from Isabella Jones (St. George, NB) who had 9 points at the half, and Reese Nowlan (Miramichi, NB) who had 8. Holland led 37-31 at halftime.
The Mounties would storm back in the third quarter however outscoring the Hurricanes 18-8 to lead by 4 heading into the fourth quarter. A strong fourth quarter saw the home side pull away to defeat Holland by a score of 74-64. Reese Nowlan led the way for the Mounties with 20 points, and Jillian Mumford's (Calgary, AB) incredible second-half performance left her with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Leading scorers for the Hurricanes was Amy Plaggenhoef with 17. Lauren Armstrong and Alexa Rancourt (Charlottetown, PEI) both finished with double doubles.
Mounties Head Coach Thomas Skabar got his first career ACAA win with the victory this afternoon.
Mount Allison (1-1) are back in action on Saturday, November 11th in Fredericton as they take on the St. Thomas Tommies with tip-off set for 6:00pm. Holland (2-1) take the floor again on Saturday, November 11th in Halifax as they visit the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics, tip-off in that one is set for 2:00pm.
