Mounties Home Opener Spoiled by Mystics
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison women's basketball team played their first official game in the new McCormack Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon against the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics.
A back and forth first half saw the visitors head into the locker room up 38-33, powered by the performances of Gwen Ettinger-O'Leary (Elmsdale, NS) and Nikki Arsenault (Summerside, PEI) who both had 9 at the break. Reese Nowlan (Miramichi, NB) led the way for the Mounties, also with 9, and a strong performance from first year Addison Martin (Moncton, NB) with 7 helped to keep the Mounties close.
The Mystics were able to break the game open in the second half however, outscoring the Mounties 52-35 in the second half to come away with a 90-68 win. Leading scorers for the Mystics were Nalini Maharaj (Sydney, NS) and Gwen Ettinger O'Leary, both with 19. Strong shooting helped propel the Mystics to victory as they shot 50% from the field ad 53% from 3. The Mounties were led by Amelie Bouchard (Timmins, ON) and Reese Nowlan, both with 16. The Mounties shot 35% from the field and 25% from 3.
Mount Saint Vincent (1-0) take the floor again Saturday, November 4th at home in Halifax as they welcome the St. Thomas Tommies with tipoff set for 2:00pm. Mount Allison (0-1) remain at home as they play host to the Holland Hurricanes on Sunday, November 5th with tipoff set for 2:00pm.
