2023 Amby Legere Invitational Recap
The Mounties had another strong showing at the Amby Legere Invitational meet at UNB over the course of the weekend. This event is the second meet of the 2023-24 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) swimming season. At the end of both sessions, the Mounties Women's team clenched at third-place finish while the Men's team swam to fourth place overall.
Saturday's session wrapped up with second-year Jordan Thomas leading the women's team with 26 points after placing third in both the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke events. Teammates Lauren Griffin-Lepine and Makayla Churchill were not far behind with 12 points each for the team. On the men's side, day one concluded with teammates Aaron McDonald and Sebastian Cariaga leading the team with 12 points each after McDonald's 4th place finish in the 800-meter freestyle and Cariaga's 4th place finish in the 200-meter freestyle. Saturday's came to an end with the 4x50 freestyle relay. Both the men's and women's A relays swam to a 4th place finish both teams missing 3rd place by less than a second.
On Sunday, Thomas continued to lead the women's team with strong showings in both the 100 Individual Medley and 200 meter breaststroke placing 5th and 4th respectively. Griffin-Lepine, once again not far behind with a 4th place finish in the 200 Individual Medley. First-year Richard Li's 6th place finish in the 200 meter butterfly put him on the map on Day 2, this swim scored 10 points for the men's team.
In a different turn of events, the 2023 Amby Legere ended with a unique 4x100 Mixed Medley Relay. Teammates; Allison Gauthier, Jordan Thomas, Sebastian Cariaga and Ian Steinwall-Pennington swam to an exciting 4th place finish, just missing 3rd place claimed by the UNB Varsity Reds by 0.2 seconds.
The Mounties now have their eyes set on the 2023 Kemp Fry AUS Invitational at Dalhousie University November 24-26th. This will be the first meet of the season that will have both preliminary sessions and final sessions. This competition marks the halfway point of the roller coaster season of AUS Swimming.
