Seawolves Defeat Mounties to Close Out Regular Season
(Sackville, NB) The UNBSJ Seawolves returned to Sackville on Sunday to play the second half of a back-to-back against the Mount Allison Mounties in ACAA Men's Basketball action.
The Seawolves opened the game with a couple of quick scores courtesy of Jack Fury-Miller. The Mounties got some push back from Brennan Devereux, who had 7 points in the quarter. Both teams were able to set up and run their offense throughout the quarter, with good scoring chances on both ends. UNBSJ was up 19-15 after one quarter.
The second quarter saw more of the same from Fury-Miller who had another 11 points for UNBSJ. The Mounties were able to hit a pair of threes from Ryan Norris to keep the score close. Aj Nash controlled the glass for the visitors with 4 rebounds in the frame, limiting the Mounties second-chance scoring abilities. The Seawolves took a 43-31 lead into half time.
The third quarter saw more balance from both sides. UNBSJ got an offensive lift from Ethan Szemerda who had 6 points and 4 rebounds. Jonas Munroe got the Mounties offense rolling with 5 points and a big steal that led to a transition layup. The Mounties couldn't shrink the Seawolves lead due to a pair of buckets from the visitors late in the period. After three quarters, UNBSJ was up 60-45.
Mount Allison had their best quarter of the game in the fourth. Rashawn Ferguson took over the game with 10 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 5 on the defensive side. UNBSJ stayed balanced and slowed down the game. The Mounties had a last push that wasn't quite enough as Dov Kahn and Szemerda both knocked down three pointers for the Seawolves to close out the game. The final score was 72-62 for UNBSJ.
This concludes the regular season for UNBSJ (11-7) and Mount Allison (1-17). The ACAA Men's Basketball Championship begins Friday, February 28th in Saint John.
