Tommies Beat Mounties In Overtime Thriller
(Sackville, NB) The St. Thomas Tommies returned to Sackville on Sunday for the second of two games against the Mount Allison Mounties in ACAA Men's Basketball action.
The first quarter saw both teams come out of the gate hot. The Tommies were led by Vincent Lyttleton who scored 15 points in the quarter. Mount Allison was led by Jonas Munroe and Brennan Devereux who each chipped in 5 points. Lead changes both ways kept energy in the building. St. Thomas was up 24-20 after one quarter.
The Mounties got a big offensive push in the second quarter from Kaden Augustin off the bench, who put up 10 points. Noah McCarthy was able to break through for 5 quick points for the visitors. Both teams traded scoring runs with neither able to pull away. The game went into the half tied at 42.
The third frame was more of the same from both sides. McCarthy hit a pair of three pointers back-to-back to give the Tommies the lead. Mount Allison pulled even once again after a big three from Jonas Munroe followed by a quick two. Neither team put together a large run, with the third quarter ending 55-55.
The Tommies picked their offense up in the fourth quarter. Once again led by Lyttleton and McCarthy, they were able to put up 20 points in the frame. The Mounties countered with a pair of three pointers from Ryan Norris. As the quarter progressed, both teams picked up the defence. The game was still tied at 75 as the clock hit zeroes in the fourth quarter.
St. Thomas took control in the extra period. Multiple scoring drives on the offensive side, paired with empty trips from Mount Allison, helped them build a double-digit lead which they were able to keep for the remainder of the game. The final score was 89-78 for the Tommies.
