Mounties Push Undefeated Mystics to Overtime
The Mount Allison Mounties men's basketball team took to the McCormack Gymnasium floor for the final time in 2024 on Sunday afternoon as they played host to the undefeated MSVU Mystics.
Adam Callaghan and Jaxon Smith would help get the visitors off to a strong start with 9 points a piece in the first quarter, but they would be near matched by a balanced attack from the Mounties led by 5 points from Kwame Asiedu. MSVU would lead at the end of the first 26-23.
Ryan Norris would heat up for the Mounties in the second quarter with 8 points but would be matched by 6 points apiece from Adam Callaghan and Jaydan Smith as the Mystics were able to retain their one-possession lead into the halftime break at 46-43.
Captain Jonas Munroe would lead Mount Allison in the third quarter with 9 points and 3 assists as the Mounties would take a 64-63 lead into the fourth quarter. Adam Callaghan would continue his strong day finding himself with 21 points at the end of the third.
A back and forth final quarter would see Jonas Munroe continue to lead his team with 9 points in the frame but Adam Callaghan and Jaydan Smith with 7 points apiece would keep the game at a stalemate and force overtime, with 80-80 the score at the end of the fourth.
Both offenses were in gear in the final 5 minutes, but Adam Callaghan adding a final 7 points, bringing him to 35 on the day, would be the final blow for the Mounties and keep MSVU's undefeated season alive.
MSVU (9-0) return to action on Saturday, January 11th on the road in Fredericton against St. Thomas with tip-off set for 4:00pm. Mount Allison (1-8) play their first game of 2025 on Friday, January 17th on the road in Halifax against the UKC Blue Devils with tip-off set for 8:00pm.
