Mounties Defeat Hurricanes Led by Munroe
The Mount Allison Mounties men's basketball team welcomed the Holland Hurricanes to the McCormack Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, looking to bounce back from a loss yesterday to the St. Thomas Tommies.
It was a strong offensive start from both sides as the visiting Hurricanes led by 4 at the end of the first quarter, 24-20. The Hurricanes were led by ACAA leading scorer Bryce Corless with 9 quick points in the first frame. Jonas Munroe got it started early for the Mounties with 9 points of his own to keep the game tight.
As the teams settled into the game the defense picked up particularly on the Mounties side, and another strong quarter from Jonas Munroe saw him reach 15 points before halftime and bring his team back to a tie game, 40-40, heading to the locker room. Aaron Simmons led the Hurricanes in the second quarter with 6 including a couple of trips to the free throw line.
An early run by Holland in the third quarter spearheaded by Diangelo Woodside saw them lead by as many as 9 before Tim Ellison turned the tide for the Mounties. A 13-point swing in the final few minutes of the quarter saw the Mounties head to the fourth quarter leading by 3.
Tough defense and clutch buckets from Jonas Munroe saw the home Mounties pull away and hang on for a 6-point victory in this one, defeating the Hurricanes by a score of 79-73.
Mount Allison (5-8) return to the floor on Sunday, February 4th on the road against Crandall with tip-off set for 2:00pm. Holland (7-7) also play their next game against the Chargers, but at home in Charlottetown on Friday, February 2nd with tip-off set for 8:00pm.
