Chargers Use Big Second Half to Win at Mount Allison
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties returned to the McCormack Gymnasium on Friday evening as they played host to the Crandall Chargers, in hopes of achieving back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
A new look zone defense from Head Coach Steve Chapman caused confusion with the Charger offense, as Marc Hofer (10 points) and Sacha Gauthier (6 points) were the only Crandall players to score in the first quarter. The Mounties offense also put up 16 points in the first led by Tim Ellison with 8 and Gabe Powter with 5 and the sides were deadlocked at 16 heading to the second.
Jonas Munroe led the way for the Mounties in the second quarter with 6 points and Deng Deng hit two big shots fresh off the bench to help give the Mounties a 3-point lead heading into halftime at 33-30.
While the Mounties led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, Crandall hung around and used a strong third quarter from Marc Hofer and Ty Cooper (5 points each) to take a one-point advantage into the fourth with the score at 48-47.
The Mounties second-half struggles would continue as star centre Tim Ellison went down with an injury 2 minutes into the fourth quarter and the Mount Allison offense was only able to muster 6 points in the final period. Crandall would shoot 50% from the field in the quarter thanks to Marc Hofer with 9 and Gabe Cormier with 8, outscoring the Mounties by 17 to take this game by a final score of 71-53. Top performers for the Chargers were Marc Hofer with 28 points and 10 rebounds as well as Ty Cooper who chipped in 13. Jonas Munroe led the way for the Mounties with 16 points and 9 rebounds, and Tim Ellison added 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Crandall (5-1) have concluded play for the 2023 calendar year and will be back in action at home in Moncton on Friday, January 12th playing host to the St. Thomas Tommies with tip-off scheduled for 8:00pm. Mount Allison (2-5) head to Halifax Sunday afternoon for their final game of 2023 against the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics, with tip-off in that one scheduled for 3:00pm.
