Shooting Struggles Hurt Mounties in Loss to Hurricanes
(SACKVILLE, NB) After a frustrating home opening loss to the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics, the Mount Allison Mounties men's basketball team was back on home court taking on the Holland Hurricanes Sunday afternoon.
The Hurricanes jumped out to an early 15-point lead in the first quarter led by the play of their Bahamian duo Diangelo Woodside (Nassau, Bahamas) and Aaron Simmons (Nassau, Bahamas) who combined for 18 of Holland's 36 points in the first half. The home Mounties would not go away however as a strong second-quarter cut the deficit to 6 heading into halftime. Tim Ellison (Halifax, NS) led the way with 8 points and Edmond Surur (Fredericton, NB) pitched in 6 more. Both teams shot poorly from beyond the arc in the first half as Holland was 0/4 and Mount Allison was 2/11.
Though the Mounties got as close as 1, they were unable to grab the lead as the Hurricanes led wire-to-wire in this one. Aaron Simmons led all scorers with 23 and Diangelo Woodside added 20. A very strong performance including an 8-0 run by himself saw Tim Ellison finish with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Mounties, with Edmond Surur finishing with 15. Holland finished the game shooting 52% from the field, while Mount Allison finished shooting 38%.
Holland (2-1) take the floor again on Saturday, November 11th as they head to Halifax for a matchup with Mount Saint Vincent, tip-off in that game is set for 4:00pm. Mount Allison also play their next game on the 11thas they travel to Fredericton for a battle with the St. Thomas Tommies, tip-off there scheduled for 8:00pm.
