Mystics Victorious in Season Opener versus Mounties
(SACKVILLE, NB) The first regular season action for the 2024 CCAA men's basketball national championship hosts, the Mount Allison Mounties, took place Saturday afternoon in the newly renovated McCormack Gymnaisum.
It was the visiting Mystics however who dominated the first half, jumping out to a 15-point lead after the first quarter and extending that lead to 24 by halftime. Mount Saint Vincent was led by Jaydan Smith (Beechville, NS) with 19 and Isaac Matheson (Bedford, NS) with 10. The Mounties struggled to shoot the ball, going 1-11 from 3 in the first half and turning the ball over 12 times. Edmond Surur (Fredericton, NB) led the Mounties with 6 at the break.
A more spirited effort from the Mounties in the second half was not enough to get close to the Mystics as the visitors won 90-68. The Mystics shot 45% from the field and were spearheaded by Jaydan Smith who led all scorers with 24 and Chase Tynes (Dartmouth, NS) added 15. For Mount Allison, Edmond Surur led the way with 17 and two Mounties had double-doubles as Jonas Munroe (Moncton, NB) had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Tim Ellison (Halifax, NS) had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Turnovers and poor shooting were costly for the Mounties as the home side turned the ball over 28 times over the course of the game and shot 28% from the field.
Mount Saint Vincent (1-0) take the floor again Saturday, November 4th at home in Halifax as they welcome the St. Thomas Tommies with tipoff set for 4:00pm. Mount Allison (0-1) remain at home as they play host to the Holland Hurricanes on Sunday, November 5th with tipoff set for 4:00pm.
