Mounties suffer heartbreaking loss, still retain national ranking. Will host Holland College on Sunday.
The Mount Allison men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Nova Scotia archrival, Mount Saint Vincent Mystics, this past Sunday 69-68 before a packed house at McCormick gymnasium. The garnet and gold entered the game with a first place record of 10-1 and appeared to be heading to their 11th win of the season in the ACAA but failed to stop a fourth quarter surge by the Mystics who outscored the Mounties 24-15 in the final quarter erasing a 12 point Mountie lead with less than 6 minutes remaining.
The Mounties entered the game averaging 96 points per game but costly turnovers and their lowest offensive output of the year resulted in the Mystic victory. The Mounties, holding a narrow 34-33 edge at half, were led by Brad Sanford and Thomas LeGallais with 15 points apiece, Aram Currie scored 13 on 5 for 7 shooting and Mack Chisholm added 10 points.
Despite the loss, the Mounties remain tied for first place in wins with the Holland Hurricanes in the ACAA standings with a record of 10-2 and dropped in the CCAA National rankings from 13 to 14th.
The Mounties now hit the road on Saturday to play the Kings University Blue Devils before returning home to face the 5th nationally ranked Hurricanes Sunday in a 5:00pm star.
