(SACKVILLE, NB) Coming off a bye week, the Mount Allison Mounties football team returned to Alumni Field under grey skies, rain and wind to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies.
The conditions played a factor on the opening kickoff, as a Mounties fumble would set the Huskies up in excellent field position. The Mounties defense would hold them to two plays however, and Adam Johnston would convert a 25-yard field goal to give Saint Mary's a 3-0 lead. Both teams would trade scoreless possessions until Adam Johnston delivered again, this time from 32 yards out to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Mount Allison would concede a safety to the Huskies to extend the visitors lead to 8 early in the second quarter. Midway through the frame Saint Mary's would cap off a 5-play, 75-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Michael Petroschke to Cherokee Robinson. After gaining possession back, Saint Mary's would go on a 9-play, 71-yard drive that ended in a Malik Williams run to open the game up to 22-0. On their final drive of the half, the visitors would add a 31-yard field goal from Adam Johnston to head into the locker room ahead 25-0.
Mount Allison would start the second half with a strong 11-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard QB sneak from Xavier Uhr. Saint Mary's would respond on their next drive however with a Liam Legge touchdown run from 1-yard out to cap off a 8-play, 75-yard drive to restore the 25-point lead, which would stand at the end of the quarter at 32-7.
The Mounties would start the fourth quarter with another strong drive ending in a 7-yard touchdown run from Brandon Quigley. Cameron Brown would add a rouge on the next Huskies drive to make the score 33-14. Mount Allison would respond with a 6-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a 5-yard Owen Istace touchdown run. Kirk-Jean Baptiste converted the 2-point to cut the Saint Mary's led to 11. A late Mounties drive would fall short, and the Huskies would leave Sackville with a 33-22 win.
Saint Mary's (2-1) now enter their bye week and will return home for a Friday night game against StFX on September 20th with kick-off set for 7:00pm. Mount Allison (1-1) head out on the road for the first time as they visit Antigonish to take on StFX on Saturday, September 14th with kick-off set for 2:00pm.
