Football Mounties Lucas Cormier and Reece Martin selected in 2023 CFL Draft
Football Mounties were well represented on Tuesday night during the 2023 CFL Draft as Lucas Cormier (Sackville, NS) and Reece Martin (Moncton, NB) saw their names called early on.
Fourth-year defensive back Lucas Cormier was selected in the 2nd round by the Ottawa Redblacks as the 10th overall pick in this year's draft. Coming off an incredible individual display at the 2023 National Combine back in March where he turned heads with his on-field sessions and off-field character interviews, Lucas saw his stock rise and with this pick becomes the second-highest drafted Mountie of all-time (DB Philippe Girard went 5th overall in 1998). The Sackville native has given everything to the Mounties Football Program and with his Bachelor of Arts, Major in Psychology degree in hand leaves us with a star-studded resume: 3-time AUS All-Star, 74.5 tackles, six tackles for loss and a whopping nine interceptions in just 21 career games.
Third-year defensive lineman Reece Martin was then selected in the 4th round by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as the 31st overall pick. The Moncton native has been an absolute nightmare for opposing AUS offences since coming into the league and his level of play had not gone unnoticed as he featured in the CFL's Scouting Bureau as a top prospect in the lead-up to the 2023 draft. The 3-time AUS All-Star, first-team All-Canadian and 2021 nominee for the J. P. Metras Trophy, which is awarded to the best down lineman in U SPORTS, has left his mark on our Mounties Football Program with career stats of: 67.5 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, six knockdowns, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one interception in 28 games.
In all, 24 of the 27 U SPORTS programs had at least one player chosen.
Since the CFL draft was expanded in 2013, 577 U SPORTS athletes have been drafted into the CFL - more than 75 per cent of the total players selected, while approximately 200 Canadian university football alumni annually start the season on the league's nine teams. This is the seventh time in the past eight drafts to see at least 50 U SPORTS players selected, with the only exception being 2021 when the draft was shortened to six rounds.
