After missing the entire 2019 season, the 2021 Mount Allison Football Mounties were back in action last Friday, September 10th against the St. Mary's Huskies. The Mounties lost 26-6 during the season's only exhibition game before the AUS regular season gets underway during the September 17th weekend.
The Mounties were pleased with what they got out of the exhibition game, with many Mounties starters only playing the 1st quarter. The offense looked strong early on, moving the ball down the field and picking up some chunk yardage. Quarterback Julian Wytinck looked poised and in control of the offense, making throws and leading the charge. Rookie quarterback James Laceby showed off his athleticism and speed breaking off multiple long runs, finishing with a 19.5 yards per carry average.
Defensively the first group was able to hold the Huskies in check, as the Mounties led 3-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. Rookie linebacker Reid Mackay led the way with seven tackles and one tackle for a loss. Kicker/punter James Parker was excellent all day, hammering a number of punts deep into St. Mary's territory and hitting two field goals.
The Mounties get started with the regular season on Saturday, September 18 at 2pm when they host the Acadia Axemen at Alumni Field for Homecoming.
