Mounties lose on the road to StFX
(Antigonish, NS) - The Mount Allison Mounties were defeated 37-0 by the AUS defending champion StFX X-Men on Friday night in Antigonish. The Mounties fall to 1-1 on the season, having beaten Acadia at home last week. StFX also moves to 1-1 after opening the season with a loss to Saint Mary's.
The Mounties found themselves in a 9-0 hole at the end of the 1st quarter on the strength of three field goals by StFX kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht. StFX put 9 more points on the board during the 2nd quarter, with Heidebrecht hitting his 4th field goal and with Josh Millar finding Kaon Julien-Grant in the endzone for the game's first major.
StFX stretched their lead with two majors in the 3rd quarter, first when Millar hit Julien-Grant for his 2nd touchdown of the day and second when Jordan Socholotiuk scored from 1 yard out. The X-Men finished the scoring in the 4th quarter when Heiderbrecht hit his 5th field goal of the night and the Mounties conceded a safety late.
While the Mounties didn't put any points on the board, they did collect 313 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback Jakob Loucks was 15 of 30 for 176 yards. The Mounties were led on the ground by AUS All-Star Chris Reid who had 69 yards on just 9 carries. Reid had a long of 21 yards and he averaged 7.7 yards per carry. Malik Richards had 6 catches for 97 yards while Quinn LeBlanc had 3 catches for 31 yards.
The Mounties now enter a bye week before returning home to host the Bishop's Gaiters on Friday, September 15th at 7:30PM. This will mark the first regular season meeting between the two teams since Bishop's joined the AUS prior to the start of the 2017 season.
