Mounties Lose 29-21 to Saint Mary's
The Mount Allison Mounties lost 29-21 to Saint Mary's on Friday night on a very physical game that saw lots of back and forth play on both sides. The Mounties made a late push, scoring with 3 minutes remaining and then getting the ball back in good field position shortly after. But the Mounties failed to find the end zone again and Saint Mary's walked away with the win.
The Mounties opened the scoring with an electrifying 88 yard punt return touchdown by Idahosa Yorke just 5 minutes into the game. This was Mount Allison's first punt return touchdown of the year. Yorke also had a 76 yard punt return touchdown against Acadia last year.
Saint Mary's started to claw their way back into the game with a 20 yard field goal from Brian Hope with 3 mins left in the first quarter. The Mounties gave up a safety early in the 2nd quarter and then Hope hit fro 26 yards to give the Huskies their first lead of the night at 8-7. The Huskies would score with 1 minute left in the first half to open a 15-7 lead at the break.
The Mounties took advantage of good field position after a bobbled snap on a punt by Hope early in the 3rd quarter and needed only 3 plays to drive 40 yards and pull within 1 point at 15-14. Kiel Ambursley rushed in from 4 yards out to give the Mounties their 2nd touchdown of the night.
The Saint Mary's offense would answer right back, driving 92 yards before Brock Berglund scored from 1 yard out. The score would remain 22-14 until 5 minutes remaining when Berglund scored again from 2 yards out to make it 29-14.
The Mounties made quick work on their next possession, driving 70 yards before quarterback Troy Downton scored from 5 yards out. This was as close as the Mounties would get as time ran out on the garnet and gold.
The Mounties will now prepare to play Acadia on national television (City TV) as part of next week's CIS game of the week broadcast. The game is scheduled for Saturday, October 15th at 2PM.
