Mounties Lose Back-and-Forth Game to X-Women
(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties women's hockey team returned to regular season action on Thursday night at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre as they welcomed the St. Francis Xavier X-Women.
Both teams traded power play chances early in the first period but neither were able to capitalize and find the opening goal. That would come with just over a minute left in the first period as the visiting X-Women took the lead with a goal from Bree MacPherson (Antigonish, NS). The home Mounties would respond nearly immediately however as Chelsea Krahenbil (Winnipeg, MB) would send the game to the first intermission tied at 1 with her slapshot finish.
Ireland McCloskey (Barrie, ON) would restore the X-Women lead with just under 7 minutes to play in the second period, and it was a lead that would hold for the remainder of the period as the home Mounties were unable to break through on the power play opportunities they found.
Trailing by 2 goals to 1 and with a 5-on-3 advantage, the home Mounties would even the game at 2 when Hailey Simoneau (Milton, ON) tipped home Rory Aiken's shot from the point with 13 minutes to go in the game. The next 12 minutes brought exciting chances at both ends, but it was StFX's Landyn Pitts (Antigonish, NS) who would score the winner with 90 seconds remaining to secure the road win for the X-Women.
St. Francis Xavier (12-2-2-0) travel to Fredericton tomorrow, January 5th to take on St. Thomas, with puck drop set for 7:00pm. Mount Allison (1-13-2-1) are back on the ice Sunday, January 7th as they continue their homestand against the UNB Reds, with puck drop set for 6:45pm.
