Mounties Capture Big Win Over First-Place Mystics
The Mount Allison Mounties women's basketball team were back in action on Friday night at the McCormack Gymnasium as they played host to the first-place Mount Saint Vincent Mystics.
Lauren Furlong got the Mounties off to a strong start in the first quarter with 8 points and strong defense from Mount Allison held the Mystics to under 30% shooting and take a 19-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Mounties offense would explode in the second quarter for 27 points thanks to 7 points apiece from both Reese Nowlan and Jillian Mumford. Amanda Pearcey had a strong quarter for the Mystics chipping in 8 points, but Mount Allison would extend their lead to 46-27 heading into the break.
Holding the 19-point advantage, the Mounties traded baskets with the Mystics in an even quarter that saw the visitors trim the deficit by only 2 at the end of the third with the Mounties still leading by a score of 60-43. Nikki Arsenault had 7 points in the quarter for Mount Saint Vincent and Lauren Furlong would continue her strong play adding 6 for Mount Allison.
The Mystics defense would pick up in the fourth quarter holding the Mounties to just 9, while Victoria Strickland put in 9 points of her own, but they were unable to chip into the Mountie lead enough as Mount Allison hung on for a 69-58 victory.
Mount Allison (12-3) return to action on Saturday, February 17th on the road against the UNBSJ Seawolves with tip-off set for 2:00pm. Mount Saint Vincent (11-2) play tomorrow afternoon, February 10th, against the Holland Hurricanes in Charlottetown, with tip-off set for 2:00pm.
