Jack Scholz Invitational
Attending the Jack Scholz Swim Meet this past weekend at Acadia were all five of the AUS Swim Teams. Under a full training load, the Mounties used this competition as an opportunity to practice racing under fatigue. While not looking for performance results, we nevertheless had some outstanding swims from our teams, showing real promise for our focus competitions later in the season.
On the women's side, rookie Jordan Thomas again demonstrated her versatility as she raced in some of her non-specialty events. Scoring 39 points overall, Jo placed 3rd in the 400 Individual Medley, posting a time which was just 3 seconds off a lifetime best in the event. She also scored with a 5th place in the 400 Freestyle and a 6th place finish in the 200 Free, both in times just off her lifetime bests.
Lauren Griffin-Lepine had some standout performances, posting personal best times in all four of her individual events. Her biggest improvement came in the 800 Freestyle, where she dropped 14 seconds to tie for 6th place. Lauren executed her race plan with confidence, coming back faster in the second half of the race. Other women who posted best times included Abi Flann in the 400 Freestyle, Haley Fitzgerald in the 200 Breaststroke and Caitlin MacPherson in the 100 Freestyle.
On the Men's side, team captain Sebastian Cariaga was unable to swim a full schedule due to injury. Despite this, he was our top scorer, earning 26.5 points with a top finish of 5th place in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle events. Jude Dean had some impressive drops in time in both the 200 & 400 Freestyle, setting lifetime bests in both events. John Roberts dropped over a personal best 200 Breaststroke time in an extremely close race where he out-touched one of the Dal swimmers right at the finish.
Special mention to those swimmers who raced (arguably) the toughest event, 200 Butterfly. Jane Gurney, Lauren Griffin-Lepine and Jordan Thomas all tackled the challenge, while on the men's side, John Roberts also looked to see where he was at in this race.
Our Mounties are back in the pool this week looking to continue to load their training in the next three weeks in anticipation of resting before the Kemp Fry Meet at Dalhousie at the end of November.
