When the Mount Allison Mounties boarded the plane in Halifax on their way to Newfoundland Friday night, they knew that they needed to come back home with wins if they wanted to keep their AUS playoff hopes alive. That's exactly what they did on Saturday, earning a 1-0 victory over the host Memorial Seahawks during the front end of a weekend double header between the teams.
Mitsotoshi Matsuda scored just six minutes into the game for the Mounties and it was all they needed as they were able to steer home the 1-0 road win. Fourth year keeper Greg McGuire earned the shutout for the Mounties, making 5 saves.
The Mounties and Seahawks will renew rivalries on Sunday when the two teams square off at 1:15PM (12:45PM atlantic). The Mounties sit in 8th place in the 10 team AUS with a record of 3 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie, good for 10 points. Even with today's win, the Mounties find themselves five points back of the final playoff spot.
After Sunday clash with the Seahawks, the Mounties will travel to Fredericton to play the league leading UNB Varsity Reds on Wednesday, October 22nd. The Mounties will then return home to close out the regular season on Friday, October 24th against Acadia.
