Mounties Advance to ACAA Semis with Win over Crandall
The Mount Allison Mounties took to the floor at Holland College on Friday evening as they squared off with the Crandall Chargers in the 4/5 quarter-final matchup of the ACAA men's basketball championships.
The Mounties would get off to a hot start in the first quarter led by Eddie Surur who had 10 points on 5/5 shooting in the first frame to give Mount Allison a 4-point lead heading into the second quarter. Conference all-star Marc Hofer had 8 points for Crandall in the first to help keep the game tight.
Both teams would trade baskets in an exciting second quarter that saw the Chargers cut the Mountie lead going into the half to just two. Marc Hofer put in another 9 points giving him 17 for the half, while first-team all-star Tim Ellison found his groove adding 10 points to his total in the frame.
It would be Moncton native Jonas Munroe that would propel the Mounties in the third quarter with 8 points including 2 from behind the arc. Devon Glenn had 6 in the quarter for Crandall, but it would be Mount Allison heading to the fourth quarter carrying a 65-59 lead.
Clutch shooting from Daniel Hawkes (12 points on 4/7 from 3) in the fourth quarter would give the Chargers the lead at one point, but the Mounties would respond well thanks to big shots from Tim Ellison and Jonas Munroe down the stretch to put Crandall away by a final score of 91-80. Tim Ellison led all scorers with 26 points, while Marc Hofer led the way for Crandall with 20.
Mount Allison now advance to the ACAA semi-final on Saturday evening as they take on the #1 seed St. Thomas Tommies with tip-off set for 5:00pm. Crandall's season comes to an end after a successful 9-9 campaign.
