Basketball Mounties Return to ACAA play Saturday February 12th, 2022
The Mount Allison Mounties will take to the court Saturday as they host the UNBSJ Seawolves in a 4:00pm start . With the ACAA’s recent announcement of return to play starting this weekend, Saturday’s game will mark the Mounties first league game in 76 days dating back to their last ACAA match up on November 28.
The Mounties and all ACAA participants will complete a revised 12 game schedule over the next 5 weeks before league championships in a newly formatted ACAA playoff schedule March 6-13. The Garnet and Gold sit presently tied for fourth in the parity filled ACAA with a record of 3-4 and will play 5 games in the upcoming weeks before league championships. No one could happier than Coach Steve Chapman ,the assistant coaches and players. “There is no question everyone is excited to be back on the court . Our players, family members, our alumni, fans, the whole league, everyone from minor programs to universities needed this. Its time. It’ s been rough on everyone. No one would have predicted when we last played a league game late November it would be 76 days before the next one. You always feel bad for the players especially those in their senior year and for the second season in a row. Last year was tough enough with a cancelled season but no one anticipated this. For the players on our team, I think this latest lockdown was a tougher go than the first time because we all completed the vaccination process in the off season and the league had such a great season going with excellent games and tough competitive play. It’s a tough balanced league this year . It will be interesting to see how all plays out, how teams come off such a long layoff of both training and league games. Now it’s sort of a race to the finish with only a handful of games left and the smallest margin of error with a single win or loss can determine a lot. It will be interesting to see how teams adjust, how the games play out with everyone having not played in so long and where everyone finishes. But most certainly everyone in our league is anxious with this return to play”
The Mounties previous meeting with the Seawolves was their Nov 28 game, coming out on top 92-63. Following Saturdays game, the Mounties will travel to Crandall on Feb 18, host Holland College on Feb 25, travel to University of Kings College Feb 27 before completing league play at Holland on March 3.
