Mounties Edge Tommies - In a First Place Battle”
This past Sunday (Feb 9) the men’s basketball Mounties won their 10th game of regular season play following a hard fought, 82-73, home court win over provincial-rival, the StU Tommies. Mounties Win! Mounties Win! Since ACAA league-play began in early November, the men’s basketball Mounties were 10-1 heading into Sunday’s game against the Tommies. With the win over the Tommies on Sunday, Garnet and Gold are now 10-3; remaining in a first-place tie with the Hurricanes and only five regular season games before the 2020 ACAA Basketball Championships in Halifax March 6 through 8, 2020.
The 11th nationally ranked Holland College Hurricanes and 12th nationally ranked men's basketball Mounties will hook up this weekend in Charlottetown.
For Mount Allison University Seniors week, an appreciative home crowd joined Mounties coaches and players in a pre-game ceremony to recognize Seniors. The men's basketball coaching staff recognized 5th year forward, Trevor Schulz, and then from there it was all business between the Tommies and Mounties; who entered the contest with identical 9-3 records.
The game’s first ten minutes saw a number of ties and lead changes before the Mounties entered second quarter with a narrow, 22-17, lead. The Tommies would never gain another advantage in the remainder of the contest, due to an impressive defensive performance and timely possessions in the final five minutes. Fredericton’s Noah McCarthy sparked the Mounties with an impressive stat line of: 22 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and McCarthy shot 10 for 12 from the free throw line.
Second-year forward, Sam Pierson, continued his excellent play with 20 points and 12 rebounds in only 31 minutes playing time. For these efforts, Pierson received recrognition as ACAA Athlete of the Week. To view this, click here: ACAA MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK. Rounding out the double-digit score were Brett Curtis, with 13 points, and James French with 11. The Tommies, now 9-4, were led by Daemen Hemphill with 13 points and Geoffrey Lavoie with 12.
