Mounties open ACAA men's basketball season with 85-75 win over STU
The Mount Allison Mounties open the 2016-2017 ACAA men's basketball season with an 85-75 win over St. Thomas at home on Saturday.
Mount Allison exerted their will early on, building up a 40-27 halftime lead in from a raucous home crowd at the MacCormack gymnasium. St. Thomas managed to close the gap a little in the 2nd half but outscoring the Mounties 48-45, but in the end the garnet and gold gave new head coach Steve Chapman his first win of the new season.
Mounties freshman Thomas LeGallais (Cornwall, ON) led all scorers with 19 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the floor. LeGallais showed poise, going 8 for 9 from the free throw line. In all the Mounties benefitted from a balanced attack that saw 5 Mounties score in double digits. Senior Alex Chisholm had 16 points, while senior Bradley Fuller added 14 points. Former football Mountie and 2-time AUS champion Rod Joseph had 12 points in his Mounties basketball debut while 2015 ACAA Rookie of the Year Bradley Sanford had 10 points.
The Tommies were led by Jeremy Speller who had 18 points after going 8-12 from the field. Mitch Claybourn had 17 points for the visitors and Sam Drummond added 11 points.
